Conservation Works

St Mary’s Basilica was commenced in 1868, soon after fire destroyed the first cathedral. It was finally completed in 2000 with the addition of the spires. St Mary’s is a beautiful example of the Neo-gothic style built of sandstone from the Sydney Basin. It is the Mother Church of Australia and a precious symbol of our Catholic faith. Our constant care is to preserve this heritage. The work of conservation began in 1996 and this huge task of conserving St Mary’s will continue well into the future.
